Harvey Scholar Travel- Logan Y. In South Africa
Logan Y.- South Africa 2014
The Harvey
Scholarship allowed me to immerse myself in the South African culture at the
University of Cape Town. I took
advantage of all opportunities around me by making new friends and sharing
great experiences with them. These adventures
consisted of camping, surfing, hiking, and lots of traveling. I had the experience of seeing the free
flowing Victoria Falls and riding an African elephant in Zimbabwe. Some of my other accomplishments would be
doing a gorge swing and the world’s highest bridge bungee jump. Balancing my travels with school, I took
three engineering classes and also got involved with clubs on the UCT
campus. The club that was the highlight
of my semester is a group called Ubunye.
Following the Harvey’s philosophy of “paying it forward”, I had the privilege
of tutoring 7th - 11th grade students on a weekly basis
in the township of Crossroads. We
covered a variety of math topics and over the course of the semester I was able
to develop a connection with many of the students. Although I wished my experience in South
Africa would never come to an end, I was able to take many heart-felt memories
with me. May that be walking 20 minutes
to campus and learning alongside South African engineering students in a whole
different education system or traveling on the cramped minibus to my
destination, the list can go on and on.
I knew that traveling to Colorado for school would be a big step in my
life, but I never imagined flying halfway around the world for a semester
abroad in South Africa. With this newly
acquired knowledge, I am able to return to Mines with a new perspective on
education and more importantly the life ahead of me. Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Harvey for continually “paying it forward” to me through this wonderful scholarship and supporting
every step I take in my life.
