Harvey Scholar Travel: Logan S. in England
Logan: England 2014
This past summer I had the
opportunity to spend a month studying International Relations, focusing on
Security Conflict and Peace at the University of Exeter in southwest
England. I spent my weeks doing
intensive classwork, and on the weekends traveled throughout Cornwall and
Devon in south west England.
The program started in London, where I was able to spend a couple days seeing the sights before we took the about four hour coach (bus) ride south west to Exeter stopping at Stonehenge along the way.
Exeter is a gorgeous town complete with picturesque rolling hills as shown below. This is was the view from my bedroom window for my time there. The class I took at the University of Exeter was just incredible. The University brought in a huge variety of professors from generals to peace activists, researchers convicted of spying by the countries they worked in, security strategists, etc. It was easily the coolest course I've ever taken and expanded my mind greatly. We were able to cover concepts I never dreamed of learning at Mines from strategic planning, to negotiating with terrorists, to the political stability of Tajikistan, and more! Our main teacher Klejda Mujal was one of the most intelligent people I've ever met with degrees in both physics and international relations, and also had easily the coolest accent I've ever heard.
Exeter also served as a perfect central base to see most of southwest England. A couple highlights from this area included below are the ancient Roman baths at Bath (complete with ancient Romans), adorable seaside villages (Exmoor and St. Ives), castles, and harbors with huge tidal swings (17 feet)!
